What are solar fuels?

"Solar fuels" are sustainably generated fuels from sunlight and reactant chemicals. These technologies are often colloquially referred to as an "artificial leaf", as they can convert sunlight to stored chemical energy.

For solar-driven hydrogen production this is a simply:

Water + Sunlight Hydrogen

The SolarFuelsDB project aims to...

...create an open database of experimental descriptions of solar to fuel devices published in peer reviewed academic literature. Initially, the focus will be on the spectrum of devices, from photoelectrochemical devices (semiconductor-electrolyte junction) to directly coupled photovoltaic and electrolysis, which can demonstrate spontaneous solar water splitting. Data visualisations and meta-analysis can then facilitate greater understanding, reveal new insights and identify knowledge gaps which may direct future research.

Current database statistics:

  • 105 papers
  • 221 reported devices
  • 593 number of authors listed
  • 17 number of countries in author affiliations
